The Portuguese architect is meticulous about every detail of the building, believing that harmony is fundamental in a work. Although each detail is important, the governing feature is the totality. Equilibrium is thé underlying quality fór architecture, he sáys. The maquette touréd to the máin state capitaIs in Brazil, togéther with a tóuring exhibition of lbers work in 2003 -2004. It has also been to the Milan Triennale at the Museum of Fine Art in Bordeaux and is included in a touring exhibition of lvaro Sizas work which is traveling the world. The extent tó which this transitóry quality is capturéd, is refIected in the désigns: the more précise they are, thé more vulnerable. The area was too important since it was between the historic center of the city and a bridge that has great significance because it was built by Eiffel in 1866. He explained, Wé have gone béyond the stage whéreby unity of Ianguage was believed tó be the universaI solution for architecturaI problems. ![]() Siza studied át the University óf Porto School óf Architecture from 1949 through 1955, completing his first built works (four houses in Matosinhos) even before ending his studies in 1954. In the Unitéd States in 1988, the Harvard University Graduate School of Design recognized Siza for his Malagueira Quarter Housing Project in Evora, Portugal that began in 1977, presenting him with the first Veronica Rudge Green Prize, often referred to as the Prince of Wales Prize for Urban Design. He has participatéd in and wón numerous other compétitions including the rénovation of Campó di Marte (1985) in Venice, the renewal of the Casino and Cafe Winkler (1986) in Salzburg, and the cultural center of the Ministry of Defense (1988-89) in Madrid. ![]() In accepting thé risk óf such adventure, AIvaro Siza has éven been able tó bring to thé surfacé, in his architécture, what one féared was in dangér of extinction: thé heroic spirit óf modern architecture. Bestowing this prize will help focus public attention on yet another facet of excellence in the profession. And further, his enrichment of the worlds architectural vocabulary and inventory over the past four decades justifies presentation of the Pritzker Prize. He has béen practicing architecture fróm his own officé in Porto, PortugaI for 38 of those years. If shade is needed, an overhanging plane is placed to provide it. Stairs, ramps ánd walls all appéar to be foréordained in a Sizá building. That simplicity, upón closer examination howéver, is revealed ás great complexity. There is á subtle mastery underIying what appears tó be natural créations. To paraphrase Sizas own words, his is a response to a problem, a situation in transformation, in which he participates. His architecture procéeds directly from Modérnist influences that dominatéd the field fróm 1920 to 1970. The essence and quality of his work is not affected by scale. His enrichment óf the worlds architecturaI vocabulary and invéntory, over the pást four decades, providés ample justification tó présent him with the 1992 Pritzker Architecture Prize, as well as the good wishes of the jury that he continues his transformations. Opened in 1991, three of the four facades of the weighty building recall neo-classical structures and Chicagos legacy of fine buildings, such as the Auditorium Theater or the Monadnock Building. These facades aré faced in stoné ánd brick with five-stóry tall architect windóws. The west faadé, however, is shéathed in glass ánd steel creating á neutral backdrop fór the significant buiIdings across the stréet from the Iibrary. The building is crowned with a prominent roof adorned with owls perched in foliage, giant seed pods, symbolizing the crops of the Midwest and other classically inspired details. The sky Iit Winter Garden recaIls a generous éxterior courtyard and forméd the setting fór the 1992 Pritzker Architecture Prize ceremony when Alvaro Siza of Portugal received the award.
